Best Calcium Supplement Brand –

Best Calcium Supplement Brand

By now it’s probably knowledge that calcium is essential for healthy bones and teeth.  It’s important that all adults consume sufficient calcium (the RDA is 1000mg per day) and it’s absolutely vital that children, pregnant and nursing mothers and older people all get plenty of calcium and with it being so vital, it’s also vitally important to ensure you arm yourself with the best calcium supplement brand and product you possibly can.

As always, in an ideal world, we’d get all the nutrients we need from a healthy diet.  Dairy fo, in particular, ar are marketed on their calcium content and this is perfectly reasonable since they are calcium-rich foods.  There are plenty of other dietary sources of calcium such as green, leafy vegetables so, in principle, even vegans can get all the calcium they need from food sources.

In the real world, however, making sure we get all the nourishment we need from our diet takes disciple and planning at the best of times and all the more so for those whose diets are restricted either through lifestyle choice (such as veganism) or necessity (such as those with allergies).

That’s where calcium supplements come in and since there are so many on the market, we’ve put together a “Top 10” list of brands we feel are quality products, which offer good value for money and which we’re happy to recommend as possible option.  As well as listing their nutritional values, we’ve included a brief review to help you choose the right option for your particular needs.

Bear in mind that the best calcium brand is the one which is right for you in your situation, always remembering that not only do different people have different needs, but also that the same person may have different needs as they go through life and their age and lifestyle changes.

With that said, here is our top ten list fo the best calcium supplement brand.

Amway Nutrilite Cal Mag D Advanced

Each serving contains:

200mg calcium (as calcium carbonate and calcified seaweed)

200iu vitamin D

7mg magnesium (as magnesium oxide)

Amway has been in business since 1959 and works by forming partnerships with expert manufacturers, who provide high-quality products for which Amway provides the branding and marketing expertise and connections with its network of retailers.  Amway tends to work with smaller stores, hence giving them access to recognizable brands at reasonable prices.

The key point to note about this supplement is that each tablet is only one fifth of the RDA for calcium and although it has vitamin D and magnesium for absorption, even the recommended three doses a day (of one tablet each), will leave you below the RDA – if this is your only source of calcium.

Of course, it’s highly unlikely that many people are going to get all the calcium they need purely from supplements.  By contrast, there are probably quite a few people out there, who do actually get most of the calcium they need from their diet and just need a bit of extra help.  If that’s you, then Amway Nutrilite Cal Mag D Advanced could be just what you need.

Citracal Calcium + D3, Slow Release

Each serving contains:

1200mg calcium (as calcium carbonate and calcium citrate)

1000iu vitamin D

80mg magnesium (as magnesium hydroxide)

Citracal is a brand owned by German company Bayer, which has been around since 1863.  We’d like to set aside jokes about German efficiency, but this is the only supplement we’ve found, which actually has more than the RDA for calcium.

In short, this is a supplement which has found a little niche to itself.  The RDA is based around the needs of the average adult and, of course, there are always some individuals with a higher-than-average need for calcium.  This is the intended market for Citracal Calcium + D3, Slow Release.

There is plenty of vitamin D and magnesium to help with absorption, so basically if you really need a lot of usable calcium in a practical form, Citracal Calcium + D3, Slow Release could be the perfect choice for you.

GNC Calcium Plus 1000

Each serving contains:

1000mg calcium (as calcium carbonate)

800iu vitamin D3

500mg magnesium

If truth be told GNC is actually more of a retailer than a manufacturer, but they work with manufacturers to develop products, which GNC then sell under their own brand.  In fairness, GNC only put their name to quality products, so even though we don’t actually know the end manufacturer, we’re happy to put our trust in GNC.

This is another supplement based on the “classic trio” of calcium, magnesium and vitamin D3.  These last two ingredients improve the body’s absorption of calcium as well as bringing extra benefits of their own.  What is less classic is that one serving is three capsules, which may be a fairly major drawback to some people.

Kirkland Signature Calcium Citrate

Each serving contains

500mg calcium (as calcium citrate)

80mg magnesium (as magnesium oxide)

800iu vitamin D3

10mg zinc

Plus vitamin B6, copper, manganese and boron.

Kirkland Signature is actually a brand name rather than a company, it’s owned by Costco, which partners with manufacturers to produce supplements on its behalf.  Costco is all about maximizing value for money and the Kirkland Signature Calcium Citrate certainly scores in this regard.

In addition to the calcium content, there is magnesium and vitamin D3 for improved absorption.  Zinc has a wide range of health benefits and there is a range of other nutritional elements for all-round goodness.  In fact Kirkland Signature Calcium Citrate is probably best thought of as a good, all-round supplement, which just happens to contain a lot of calcium.

On the one hand, Kirkland Signature Calcium Citrate has about half the calcium of the average supplement (which is half of the RDA) and even the presence of magnesium oxide and vitamin D3 can only do so much to boost absorption.  On the other hand, this supplement is very affordable and may be all you need, if you just want to boost your existing calcium intake.

Nature’s Bounty Coral Calcium

The Nature’s Bounty company started in 1971 and their ethos has been much the same since then.  It aims to use natural ingredients to create health-promoting supplements.  Nature’s Bounty has built up a popular following due to the effectiveness of its products and its emphasis on promoting and protecting the natural world.

Nature’s Bounty Coral Calcium is the only supplement on our list to be made from coral calcium.  Coral calcium is made from fossilized coral deposits rather than living coral reefs, hence it is perfectly environmentally friendly as well as safe to consume.  The one point to note is that calcium is only about a third of the content of coral calcium.

What this means in practice is that the 1000mg of coral calcium translates into 370mg of usable calcium, which is partnered with vitamin D3 and magnesium for absorption.  This is about a third of the RDA, which means that Nature’s Bounty Coral Calcium could be a good choice for people who just need to improve on their regular calcium intake.

Each serving contains:

370mg calcium (from 1000mg coral calcium)

400iu vitamin D3

56mg magnesium (from magnesium oxide and magnesium citrate)

Rainbow Light Calcium Citrate Mini-Tablets

Each serving contains:

800mg calcium (as calcium citrate)

800iu vitamin D3

Boron, spirulina and horsetail extract

Founded in 1981, Rainbow Light is based in California, U.S.A. and has made its name by producing nutritional supplements which are both good for the user and good for the planet in that, wherever possible, Rainbow Light uses whole foods and pure ingredients.  As you can see from the ingredients list, they like to think out of the box.

In addition to the headline calcium, there is vitamin D3 to help with its absorption.  Boron is also known for strengthening bones, spirulina is an all-round wonder food, which has many benefits including being a rich source of iron.  Horsetail may be hated by gardeners, but it’s full of silicon, which helps protect against or treat osteoporosis.

Added bonus – these tablets are particularly small and easy to digest.  If you have a sensitive stomach then this option is an excellent choice.

Solaray Calcium Magnesium Zinc

Each serving contains:

1000mg calcium (as calcium citrate, calcium carbonate, calcium chelate and calcium hydroxide)

500mg magnesium (as magnesium oxide, magnesium citrate, and magnesium chelate)

25mg zinc

Solaray started out life as an independent company in 1973 before being bought over by Nutraceutical in 1993.  The original brand name was kept as it had such a high level of positive recognition from consumers.  It has to be acknowledged that these are far from the most affordably priced supplements around, but you are paying for the knowledge behind them rather than just for the brand.

Solaray Calcium Magnesium Zinc is unusual for a couple of reasons.  First of all, it’s a twist on the popular favourite of calcium, magnesium and vitamin D3, in that it keeps the magnesium, to help with absorption but swaps out the vitamin D3 for zinc, which has a wide variety of health benefits.  Secondly it provides both the calcium and the magnesium in different forms.

Leaving aside the higher price, there is one last potential drawback to this option, which is tha one serving is a total of no less than four capsules.

Solgar Calcium Magnesium

Each serving contains:

500mg magnesium (as magnesium oxide and magnesium citrate)

400iu vitamin D3

Solgar has been in business since 1947 and to stay around for that long you need to know your stuff.  Even if this is your first foray into supplements at all let alone calcium supplements in particular, you’ll probably recognize the name Solgar, you’ll find it anywhere nutritional supplements are sold, from supermarket shelves to high-end health stores – and for good reason.

Although the headline supplement is calcium, Solgar have also included magnesium and vitamin D3, as these help to improve calcium absorption.  This means that Solgar Calcium Magnesium is a great all-round supplement for the health of your bones and teeth.

Swanson Calcium Citrate & Vitamin D

Each serving contains:

630mg calcium (as calcium citrate)

400iu vitamin D

Swanson Health Products takes its name from Leland Swanson Sr, who founded the company in 1969.  Leland Swanson had a great person interest in the field of health and wellness and realized that if he was looking for high-quality supplements to meet his own needs, other people probably were too.  They were and SHP grew and prospered on a combination of effective products, great value and excellent customer service.

This is a straightforward supplement, with about two thirds of the RDA for calcium plus vitamin D for absorption.  It’s a great choice for people who do get at least some calcium from their diet, but need to boost their intake.  It’s also priced very affordably.

Best Time To Take Calcium

The rule of thumb is to take your calcium supplement with food, preferably with a meal.  This is a good choice for any type of calcium, since the food will stimulate your digestive juices, which will help to break down the calcium.  If your calcium supplement is based on calcium citrate, then you can choose to ignore this guideline, but just because you can, it doesn’t mean that you should.

Calcium citrate is known as having high bioavailability, which basically means it’s easily absorbed by the body.  This means it can be taken on its own, but in our opinion this is only a meaningful benefit if you need to take medication with your meal and need to keep this separate from your calcium supplement.

When thinking about when to take your calcium supplement, you should also think about dosage.  The recommendation is to take at most 500mg of calcium at a time.  For clarity, this is for ease of digestion rather than safety.  Depending on what kind of supplement you use, this may mean dividing a single tablet or capsule into two doses.  Ideally you will want to take both of these with a meal, but if this is not practical, look for a supplement based on calcium citrate.

Your final consideration, as we alluded earlier, is whether or not you need to take prescription medication such as antibiotics or blood pressure medication.  We would also advise against taking calcium with iron-rich meals or iron supplements as this may hinder the absorption of both nutrients.

Does Calcium Cause Constipation?

It’s not a pleasant topic but it comes up regularly with regards to supplements, particularly mineral supplements such as calcium.  It may also be a reason why some people avoid taking calcium supplements, even though they realize they need more calcium in their diet.  So let’s talk about it.

There are many causes of constipation, most of which link back to lifestyle issues.  In this case, if you ingest calcium which your body is unable to digest, then you are at risk of experiencing constipation.  This issue can be addressed in two ways.  One way is to take a highly digestible form of calcium, such as calcium citrate and only take at most 500mg at a time.  The other is to work on the overall health of your digestive system.

Remember that supplements, including calcium supplements, are intended to give a boost to a generally healthy lifestyle including a decent diet.  If your lifestyle is in need of a meaningful overhaul then your body will find a way to make this clear to you and that way may be constipation.

If you experience constipation when taking calcium supplements and you have chosen a digestible supplement and suitable dose, then it may well be that you need to make some adjustments to your overall lifestyle.

Change one – eat more fibre

Fibre is often called roughage and it basically acts as a gentle scourer for your digestive system.  It helps to break down other foods and keeps everything moving from A to B, thus helping to keep your bowel movements regular.  If you experience constipation, then your first point to check should be the amount of fibre in your diet.

Important point: fresh fruit and vegetables have lots of fibre, but fruit and vegetables juices have hardly any.  If you are in the habit of drinking smoothies and so forth, then you may be getting lots of vitamins and minerals but you won’t be getting a lot of fibre (and you may be consuming a lot more sugar than you realize).

Change two – drink more healthy liquids

By healthy liquids we mean water and liquids which are close to water, i.e. not alcohol (but if you must, stick to longer drinks like beer) or fizzy drinks (again, if you must, stick to the sugar-free versions).

Take more exercise

Exercise speeds up your metabolism and, basically, helps to get your insides moving as well as your outsides
